Paul Weber was born in 1823 in Darmstadt, Germany.
He studied art in Frankfurt, Germany before coming
to the United States at the age of 25. He
began exhibiting at the Pennsylvania Academy
of the Fine Arts in 1849-69 and 1976-84.
He also exhibited at the National
Academy of Design from 1850 to 1893, the Boston
Athenaeum in 1864, the Brooklyn Art Association in 1861,
1869, 1873, and 1884, and the Paris Salon in 1865 and 1868.
In 1857 he toured Scotland and Germany and in 1860 he
returned to Darmstadt in 1860 where he was appointed
court painter. He traveled once again to the
United States, probably about 1870, certainly by 1881, when he gave his address
as Philadelphia. An expert technician, he taught
Edward Moran, William Stanley Hazeltine, and
William Trost Richards.
