Ralph Albert Blakelock (1847-1919)
Ralph Albert Blakelock was born on October 15, 1847 in New York City and died in Adirondacks, NY on August 9, 1919.
A self-taught member of the National Academy of Design, Blakelock exhibited there from 1868 to 1899. He also exhibited at the Brooklyn Art Association in 1874, 1879, 1880, and 1884. He exhibited at the Paris Expo of 1900 where he was awarded a prize.
Blakelock had a studio in the 10th Street Studio Building in New York City in 1884. He became an associate member of the National Academy of Design in 1913 and a full member in 1916.
His work has been preserved at the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the Worcester Art Museum, the National Gallery of Art, the Brooklyn Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Montclair New Jersey Museum of Art, the Hackley Artists Guild in Muskegon, Michigan, the Cincinnati Museum, and the Carnegie Institute. His daughter, Marian, painted in a similar style and some of her paintings bear the forged signature of her father.
