Amos Emerson Dolbear (1837-1910)

Amos Emerson Dolbear was born in Norwich, CT on November 10, 1837. He can be classified as an amateur artist because his main forte was in the field of science. He graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University and then earned degrees of Master of Arts and Mining Engineer at the University of Michigan in 1867. He became a professor of physics at Tufts University from 1874 to 1906. He was Professor Emeritus of Physics and Astronomy thereafter until his death on February 23, 1910.

Dolbear invented the first permanent magnet telephone/receiver in 1876 followed by the electric static telephone (wireless) in 1879.

Before becoming involved in science, Dolbear became interested in lithography, and, at 23 years of age, established a press for the practice of the art in Springfield, MA, with Bradley as printer. He has a signed, colored lithograph by Bradley called Mount Monadnock, 12 5/8 x 15 3/8 inches.
