New York City directories from 1842 to 1862 list Baker as a saddler, gunsmith, and importer. In 1847 he did silver plating. His paintings were in the collections of Cropsey and Leupp. Some of his paintings are copies of works by Thomas Cole, whom he admired. He may be the father of Charles Baker (1844-1906), the landscape painter and critic.
