Granville Perkins was born in Baltimore in 1830.
He was primarily a scenery painter and illustrator. He studied in Philadelphia with James Hamilton. About 1855 he moved to New York City and began to work for Frank Leslie’s Illustrated Newspaper. About five years later he started a long engagement with Harper and Brothers.
He was a member of the American Watercolor Society. A fine watercolorist, Perkins exhibited a painting titled “Mt. Washington” in that medium in 1881 at the Boston Art Club for $200. He illustrated The Heart of the White Mountains in 1882.
He exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 1856. He exhibited at the National Academy of Design and the Brooklyn Art Association from 1862 to 1889.
His work has been preserved at the Mystic Seaport Museum and the Peabody Museum in Salem, MA.
He died in New York City in 1890.
