The signature says B. Champney O.M.C. 1847. O.M.C. stands for a club that was formed by some American artists that were in Europe in the 1840’s. They helped support each other while in Europe because they were always “Out Of Money”. Champney talks about the Out Of Money club and its various members on page 22 of his book Sixty Year’s Memories of Art and Artists.
